  • What is ARCD/c?

ARVD/C is a rare, hereditary heart condition that affects the right side of the heart. It can cause sudden death in young people. ARVD/C is caused by a defect in the genes that control heart muscle. The condition can cause abnormal heart rhythms and problems with the way blood flows through the heart. ARVD/C is treated with medicines to control heart rhythm, surgery to repair or replace the heart valve, and a pacemaker if needed.

  • What are the symptoms of ARVD/C?

The main symptom of ARVD/C is an abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia). Other symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting spells, and heart palpitations. ARVD/C is often diagnosed in adolescence or early adulthood. Men are affected more often than women are.

  • How common is ARVD/C?

It’s estimated that about 1 in 100 people have ARVD/C. People with a family history of the disease are more likely to have ARVD/C.
  • What causes ARVD/C?

ARVD/C is caused by a defect in the genes that control heart muscle. If someone has mutated genes for this condition, they may pass it on to their children. That’s why it is considered a hereditary condition. Other factors that can make you more likely to develop ARVD/C include:

    – Age (most people are diagnosed in adolescence or early adulthood)

    – Gender (men are affected more often than women. Women may experience this condition around menopause, when the body is changing rapidly.)

    – Heart problems like cardiomyopathy
